Picky Eating to Pediatric Feeding Disorder
Understanding Picky Eating and Feeding Challenges
Picky eating and pediatric feeding disorders exist on a spectrum of feeding challenges in children. Some children have a limited range of preferred foods, avoid certain textures, or are hesitant to try new foods—often described as picky eating. This might look like eating the same foods repeatedly, refusing certain food groups, or becoming upset when new foods are offered. In other cases, feeding challenges are more persistent and may impact nutrition, growth, or daily routines, which may be described as a pediatric feeding disorder. Children may eat very few foods, struggle to maintain a balanced diet, or experience ongoing stress around meals.
While some level of selectivity can be part of typical development, especially in toddlers, ongoing or more significant feeding challenges can affect a child’s ability to participate comfortably in mealtimes, try new foods, and meet their nutritional needs. These differences can also impact family routines and create stress around eating. Understanding where your child falls on this spectrum is an important first step in supporting more flexible, positive, and successful feeding experiences.
What to Expect in Feeding Therapy
In feeding therapy, we focus on helping children feel more comfortable, flexible, and confident with food. Sessions are play-based and low-pressure, gradually building tolerance for new foods while supporting positive mealtime experiences. This approach is different from oral phase dysphagia, which focuses on how the mouth is working during chewing and swallowing. That said, some children with feeding challenges may also have underlying oral motor differences, which we assess and address when appropriate.
We work closely with parents to provide practical strategies that support success at home, helping children in Grapevine and surrounding North DFW communities expand their diets and participate more comfortably in everyday meals.
If your child has a limited diet or mealtimes feel stressful, we’re here to help. Reach out to schedule an evaluation and learn how we can support more positive, flexible eating.
